ABPsi Community Service Projects 2014-2015

Our upcoming service events…

Adopt a Spot Litter Control

    We want to help keep the city of Columbia clean by lending a hand and collecting litter from different designated areas. The Adopt-a-spot program will provide all the necessary tools to help; we just offer our time. Being Mizzou students, we owe more to the city of Columbia than taking care of our campus; the real problems are all around the city. A clean environment breeds a happier, healthier lifestyle and we, the members of the Association of Black Psychologists pride ourselves in being able to promote that.

Food Bank of Central/Northeast Missouri

    Another problem the people of Columbia face is poverty. Some families go by daily not knowing where their next meal will come from. By volunteering at the food bank we would assure that families would have sufficient meals. We want to rid Columbia residents and their families of the stress of not having a necessity essential to life. Mental health is strongly connected with physical health.

Habitat for Humanity

    The members of ABPsi also want to help combat homelessness in Columbia. Habitat for humanity is a program set up to build and provide housing for those in need. Those who are skilled are encouraged to help with the actual building, while there are plenty of other ways to assist.

Lois Bryant House

    As stated above, homelessness is a disturbing problem in Columbia. The Lois Bryant house is a non-profit organization in place to provide relief for those in need. The house is available to simply relax in and get out the elements but has an option to stay overnight. Meals are also provided for guests of the Lois Bryant House. The members of ABPsi want to help in whatever way we can whether it be helping to prepare meals, cleaning the house or just fellowshipping with the temporary guests. Sometimes, the best way to help someone is to listen.

Youth Mentoring

    All young people deserve a nurturing and safe upbringing where they can express themselves openly and feel accepted. We would love to play a role in the fundamental developing period of adolescents. A key to mental health is having a stable outlet and someone around who cares and that is exactly who we plan on being for the young people in our community.

OUR HISTORY

01

/ ABPSi MIZZOU

ABPsi was established at Mizzou because African American students wanted to be represented accordingly in the field of Psychology.

“ I felt it was necessary to have ABPsi on campus to represent the psychological need and differences and it’s necessity for people of color on campus of the University of Missouri.” – Makida Seward, Midwest Undergraduate Representative 2012, Co Founder of ABPsi - MU

As of November 2014, we are represented under the Legion of Black Collegians, the African-American student governemnt of our campus. This means that we will be working closely with other members to increase awareness throughout our area. LBC and connected committees can contribute ideas, funding, and other resources to improve our organization as we improve theirs.

/  HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

02

The Association of Black Psychologists was founded in San Francisco in 1968 by a number of Black Psychologists and the larger Black community. Their objectives were:

  • To organize their skills and abilities to influence necessary change

  • To address themselves to significant social problems affecting the Black community and other segments of the population whose need society has not fulfilled.

/  THE FUTURE

03

  • Increase awareness about our organization.

  • Address significant social problems that affect us as African-Americans.

  • Host events that back our mission and help fulfill our purpose as an organization.

  • Nationally, establish a central organization of Black Psychologists;

  • Develop funding sources for working capital, staff support, and educational programs;

  • Seek funding for projects involving Black Psychologists, such projects to include, but not be limited to: Scholarly Journals, Training Programs, Recruitment of Students and Faculty and community Mental Health Care Programs;

  • Work with such organizations of behavioral scientists as are able to implement the purposes of The Association.
